The Herbert Roback Scholarship:  2008 Information

WHAT IS IT?  One scholarship of $7,500 is presented to a graduate student currently enrolled, or admitted for enrollment, in a full-time Master’s Degree program in public administration, public and international affairs and/or political science.

WHY IS IT GIVEN?
The late Herbert Roback was a highly respected public servant.  During his 34-year career, he became involved in encouraging talented and promising students to consider lifetime careers in the public service.  To honor Mr. Roback, his family and friends established the Herbert Roback Scholarship Fund to perpetuate his work.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Applicants who meet the above criteria of enrollment and discipline from a university in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, the Maxwell School at Syracuse University, Brandeis University, the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton, John Jay College at CUNY, Albany/SUNY or from New York University are eligible to apply.

HOW DO YOU APPLY?
Applications must be submitted to the Scholarship Committee by the applicant’s school. Applicants and their schools must submit:

1.    Undergraduate and graduate transcripts
2.    A biographical resume or curriculum vita
3.    Two letters of recommendation from professors
4.    A 500-word statement describing applicant’s professional interest.

WHEN DO YOU APPLY?  Each school must transmit complete nomination packages (two per university) to the National Academy of Public Administration by May 31, 2008. The winner of the Herbert Roback Scholarship will be notified by the Academy by July 15, 2008; a check will be mailed shortly thereafter.

HOW IS THE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT RECOGNIZED?  
The recipient of the scholarship will be invited to attend the annual meeting of the National Academy of Public Administration in November 2008, where he or she will be formally recognized before the gathered members and distinguished guests of the Academy.

WHO ADMINISTERS THE SCHOLARSHIP?
The scholarship fund is administered by the National Academy of Public Administration, which is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization of which Herbert Roback was a distinguished Fellow.  Selection of the scholarship winner is made by a Scholarship Committee composed of esteemed individuals who are knowledgeable about the requirements and needs of the public service and those qualities a successful careerist should possess.
