Thoughts from Richard Danzig

March 26, 2004

John,

I am sorry, but I will be on vacation out of the country on April 2, so I will not be participating in the meeting.

I suggest, however, that the committee focus on the problems that would arise in the wake of a major aerosol anthrax attack on a city, followed by others on other cities. (Anthrax is merely an illustrative agent, but it helps to make the thinking concrete.) What issues would arise? How would city, state and federal agencies share information about what was happening? How would they coordinate advice to citizens? How would they cooperate to address the practical problems (decontamination, drug distribution, policing, etc.)?

With best wishes for a good meeting,

Richard

Academy Fellow Celebrates Fifty Years of Public Causes

Academy Fellow Brian O’Connell shares the priceless lessons he has learned during a lifetime of third sector experience in Fifty Years in Public Causes: Stories from a Road Less Traveled. O’Connell’s memoir traces his remarkable life in public service, from his early forays in the non-profit sector to his ascendancy as national director of the Mental Health Association, and then as founder of the Independent Sector.

Told through fascinating personal stories, O’Connell’s memoir includes a strong mandate to his successors in public service. He offers his readers the lessons he would emphasize for those who take the journey on that road less traveled.
