Fellow and Board member, Blue Wooldridge recently received the 2011 NASPAA Social Justice Curriculum Award. The award is designed to promote the incorporation of a social justice lens in the core curriculum and $1,000 is given to the faculty member or faculty team that has developed a required core course that meets this objective.
Recognized for the award was Dr. Blue Wooldridge for his Financial Management in Government course which explores general concepts, principles and techniques of financial management as they are applied in governmental units and agencies.
The award was received last week during the 2011 NASPAA Annual Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. Dr. Wooldridge is a professor at the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is the Chair of the Academy’s Standing panel for Social Equity in Governance.
John M. Bryson, McKnight Presidential Professor of Planning and Public Affairs in the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota, was awarded the 2011 Dwight Waldo Award from the American Society for Public Administration. The award honors persons who have made “outstanding contributions to the professional literature of public administration over an extended scholarly career of at least 25 years.” To learn more about the award, visit the American Society of Public Administration.
Getting Back in the Black, a report from the Peterson-Pew Commission on Budget Reform, called on policymakers to reform the federal budget process in order to help stabilize the nation’s debt-GDP ratio. The following National Academy Fellows, Fellows-Elect, and Honorary Fellows served as members of the 36-member Commission:

- Hon. David M. Walker, former Comptroller General of the United States
Academy Fellow Steve Redburn served as the project staff director.
Retired Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen was interviewed on NPR’s Morning Edition. He discussed the lessons he’s learned from overseeing the federal government’s response to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Allen was also involved in the response to the Haitian earthquake and hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Listen to the full interview.

Harry L. Jones Sr. is one of five University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill graduates to receive the 2010 UNC Distinguished Alumna/Alumnus Award. The award was established in 1971 to recognize outstanding contributions to humankind. Read the full story here.
