Former NTSB Vice Chair Joins Academy to Head Transportation Initiatives
Washington, DC -- April 20 -- Carol J. Carmody, who recently completed nearly five years as a vice chair and member of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), will direct transportation initiatives at the National Academy of Public Administration, President C. Morgan Kinghorn has announced. Carmody brings to the Academy three decades of leadership experience in ensuring transportation safety for travelers, in the United States and abroad.
In 2000, President Clinton appointed Carmody to the NTSB, which is charged with investigating all civil aviation accidents and major highway, marine and railroad accidents. Carmody served two years as the NTSB's vice chairman and twice as its acting chairman. She was the on-scene member for several major transportation accidents and chaired the NTSB's public hearings into the 2001 crash of American Airlines flight 567 in Queens, New York.
Carmody was also appointed by Clinton as the U.S. Representative to the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), where she served from 1994 to 1999. There, she played a leading role in persuading the organization to establish an oversight program to improve safety for travelers around the world by assessing nations' compliance with ICAO standards. Prior to that time, Carmody was a professional aviation staff member for the Senate Commerce Committee and held various positions with the Federal Aviation Administration, including Deputy Director of Congressional Services.
"Carol Carmody's skills and commitment to the public service will serve the Academy very well," Kinghorn said. "For nearly four decades, the Academy has been a leading source of trusted advice and practical expertise for improving the performance of government institutions. Carol will play a pivotal role in building upon this solid track record in the transportation arena, where innovative approaches are critical."
Carmody holds a Master's degree in Public Administration from American University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma.
The National Academy of Public Administration is an independent, non-profit, non-partisan corporation chartered by Congress to provide "trusted advice" to government agencies on issues of governance and public management.
