March 23, 2007 — The American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) and the National Academy of Public Administration announce the winners of the 2007 National Public Service Awards, the premier awards for excellence in public service at all levels of government. The awards ceremony takes place March 26, 2007 at noon, during ASPA’s national conference at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC.
ASPA and the Academy established the National Public Service Awards in 1983 to honor individuals whose accomplishments are models of public service both inside and outside the work environment. The awards recognize individuals who exhibit the highest standards of excellence, dedication and accomplishment over a sustained period of time and who are creative and skilled career managers. The 2007 National Public Service Award winners are:
- Peter M. Blumberg, Department Head, Laboratory of Cancer Biology and Genetics, National Cancer Institute
- Barbara S. Dorf, Director, Office of Departmental Grants Management and Oversight, Office of Administration, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
- James E. Hartwell, Jr., Program Manager, Test and Evaluation Squadron, U.S. Air Force Hurlburt Field
- Thomas H. Muehlenbeck, City Manager, Plano, TX
- Mark A. Pisano, Executive Director, Southern California Association of Governments
The awards ceremony also will feature presentation of the Keeper of the Flame Award, given to individuals who continue to provide public service after their official retirement from the public service profession. This year’s recipients are Marcy Crowley, former director of professional development for the College of Public and Community Service, University of Massachusetts at Boston, and Harriett G. Jenkins, former director of the U.S. Senate Office of Fair Employment Practices.
